Founders: Seven feminist Cameroon women, aware of the upsurge of violence against women in our environment, of the attackers’ impunity, the people’s complicity, and the victims’ powerlessness: NDOME EKOTTO, Esther ENDALE, Elise Pierrette MEMONG MENO, NGOBO EKOTTO, SIKE BILLE, Dora ESSAKA DEIDO, Maria MOUEN KALLA LOBE.

Distinguishing features: Women-only non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profitmaking feminist Association. A women’s stance on violence against women and girls.

Philosophy: The ALVF states that all of our actions, in private or in public, are political acts. The ALVF aims at promoting “the other word, the other power” for a harmonious society.

Politics: Placing women at the centre of the debate.

Mission: Eliminate all kinds of violence women and girls suffer from in all (private, public, political) spaces in Cameroon.

Goals:

  • Fight the internalisation of patriarchal values perpetuating violence against women;
  • Promote a fair social status;
  • Promote positive human values taking into account the difference between both sexes;
  • Take part in the establishment of a non-violent society.

Organisation of the Association

Strategies:

  • Raising women’s awareness of their specific conditions as oppressed women and the patriarchal values and factors perpetuating this oppression;
  • Helping women grow a personal feeling of identity, a spirit of social change, and participate more actively in the change;
  • Raising men and women’s awareness of the need to fight violence;
  • Giving direct help to women victims of violence.

Activities:

  • Awareness raising of the public regarding violence against women
  • Education of victims to the use of the competent bodies and the proper protection tools against violence;
  • Education of victims to their rights;
  • Surveys – Research on violence against women;
  • Supervision and follow-up of women victims of violence;
  • Training of the groups in Gender-Based Violence (GBV);
  • Training of social workers in feminist intervention.

Structures: The ALVF has four (4) branches located in the Central, Extreme North, Littoral, and Western Regions. Their roles:

  • Safeguarding the ALVF’s ideology and politics.
  • Developing programmes.

Each branch has different structures. First, each branch has a direct help centre for women victims of violence, called Centre Vie de Femmes (CVF – Women’s Life Centre), located in the following cities:
Central Region: Yaoundé
Extreme North Region: Maroua
Littoral Region: Douala
Western Region: Bafoussam

The other structures:
2 Documentation Centres in the cities of Yaoundé and Maroua;
1 Centre de Conseil et d’Ecoute de Santé Reproductive pour les Adolescents (es) et les Femmes (CESRAF – Advice and Listening Centre of Reproductive Health for Women and Teenagers) in Yaoundé;
1 Information and Education Centre for Women in Kousséri.

Administrative Bodies: The General Assembly, the Association’s supreme decision-making body; the Founders’ College; the Board of Administration; and the Executive Board composed of: a President, a Vice-President, a Treasurer, assisted by a Programme Manager and an Accountant.
