Philippine Network for Economic, Social, and Cultural (ESC) Rights Holds Founding Assembly

The Philippine NGO-PO Network for ESC Rights will hold its first and founding General Assembly on June 4, 2010 at the Fersal Place in Quezon City, Philippines. Around sixty (60) delegates from different people’s organizations (POs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are expected to attend the said activity.

The delegates will come from the different sectors of Philippine society such as women, farmers, workers, children, urban poor, teachers, and other marginalized groups who will be coming together to forge a broad social movement that will advocate for ESC rights.

Atty. Leila de Lima, chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights will grace the occasion by giving the keynote speech while Jean Louis Bertrand, second counsellor of the French embassy and Prof. Virginia Dandan of the UN Committee on ESC Rights will also be there to express their support to the network. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will also be sending its representative during the opening ceremonies of the activity.

In the afternoon of the assembly, delegates will have to discuss and agree on the proposed orientation paper and general program of action (GPOA) of the ESC Network. The members are also expected to elect officers after adopting a working structure for the ESC Network.
