Free trade : agrofuels!

Tuesday 16 April 2013 by Terre des Hommes France

The EU is on the brink of ratifying some trade agreements with Central America countries, Colombia and Peru, which are intended to increase EU importations of basic products such as raw materials devoted to biofuels production. These agreements will aggravate local pressure on natural resources in those countries, as societal and environment impact studies ordered by the European Commission point out. The European Council will propose these draft agreements to the European Parliament to be ratified, without any legal chance to improve them. "We are seeing a change not only in land ownership but in land use too, linked to expansion of sugar cane and oil palm, a change which is driving a global realignment. It has happened in several countries. In Guatemala, 29% of palm oil plantations in 2010 were peasants’ lands ten years ago, devoted to grow food" said : Alberto Alonso Fradejas. PhD. International Institute of Social Studies (ISS).
