This document was drafted within the framework of the economic, social and cultural rights methods exchange programme (“ESC Rights Action”) lead by Terre des Hommes France.

It deals with methods to impact public policies followed by stakeholders with various practices, cultures and experiences from Brazil, India, Sri-lanka, Mexico, China, Cameroon, Mali and Senegal.

Methods to claim your rights. Sample cases on housing, land and food rights

This guide was completed within the framework of the programme for the exchange of experiences on economic, social and cultural rights enforceability approaches coordinated by Terre des Hommes France. It is based on stakeholders’ experiences with various practices, cultures and backgrounds in countries such as the Philippines, India, Brazil, Cameroon, Mexico and Senegal.

It aims to provide tools for civil society organizations to enable them to assert and claim their rights.

This guidebook brings together the field experience of Terre des Hommes France’s old or recent partners such as Guamina, as part of the Malian ESC Rights Platform, Convergencia de Organismos Civiles (Mexico), FASE (Brazil), and PhilRights (Philippines) and the Impact Network in drafting a shadow report for presentation to the UN Committee on ESC rights.

Organizations from Benin, Cameroon, France, Guatemala, India, Mali, Mexico, the Philippines, Senegal and Togo shared their experiences on:

“Training on Your Rights: Modules on Monitoring Economic, Social and Cultural Rights”, PhilRights, 2006.

“Training on Your Rights” consists of four modules that will equip people with needed skills to monitor and document the realization or abuse of their rights. Also included are monitoring tools that can be used to document the extent of fulfillment of – or deficiency in – their economic, social, and cultural (ESC) rights.

The modules also offer an extensive input on basic human rights and five focus ESC rights namely rights to work, food, health, housing, and education.
